As they start to dig their roots more deeply into the remarkable limestone soils of Hillier, our pinot noir vines are offering better and better results, as this solid vintage demonstrates. The remarkable balance achieved in our 2009 pinots, thanks to some well-timed heat and sunshine, is obvious from the get-go, as beautiful ripe cherry and floral aromas jump out of the glass, with some tobacco and earthy notes (mushroom, autumn leaves) adding a touch of complexity. With its great depth and multilayered feel, this ripe and elegant pinot is already open, well-defined and immediately satisfying. Cellaring should yield an interesting evolution, but it may be hard to resist this seductive wine for very long.
“…this pinot noir delivers solid flavours from start to finish. The fruit-acid balance is well done, and contributes a tangy, almost juicy texture. It’s drinking well now and will hold another four-five years.” 4 star rating

“There is good colour depth in what was a difficult vintage. The nose has classic County sour cherry jam fruit nicely framed by gentle wood smoke, earth, dill and spice from 16 months in French oak (25% new barrels). Good weight and some richness on the front palate as well, with sourish acidity and quite firm, dry but not austere tannin mingling with earthy notes. Good to very good length. I would age it another year or two. I like the complexity but it is clammed up on the finish. Tasted July 2011″

“Closson’s 2009 pinot is a light, herbal, mineral and vibrantly zesty example with terrific persistence and delicate fruit flavours. This highlights the County’s terroir nicely, emphasizing fruit freshness and limestone and oyster shell-like stoniness; tannins are light, firm and grippy, acid is saliva-inducing, and length impressive. Wood is barely detectable. Lovely wine in a refined mould. Tasted September 2011. 91 points. Drink 2011-2015″
