A much-loved vacation destination, Prince Edward County is famous for its unspoiled countryside and 800 kilometers of spectacular coastline. What is less known about this part of Southeastern Ontario is that it is Canada’s fastest growing wine region.
What is even less known is that fine wines were produced here more than a century ago. In fact, a County winery won a medal for its wines at the 1876 Philadelphia Exposition. However, in the intervening decades, the focus on winemaking was lost — until a group of knowledgeable and talented wine industry pioneers rediscovered the region ten years ago.
About 30 growers now dot the countryside from the west shores of the County to the Southeastern shores. Since 1999, more than 500 acres of vines have been established.
What is so special about the region? A large limestone bed that literally rises out of Lake Ontario, Prince Edward County has unique, varied, and often thickly graveled soils similar to the best vineyards in Burgundy. With percentages of clay similar to Burgundian soils, the clay loam and soils of the County are some of the best for grape growing in North America.
“Its unspoiled charm has won over the likes of super-chef Jamie Kennedy, Maclean’s editor Anthony Wilson-Smith and iconoclastic Niagara winemaker Deborah Paskus”
–John Allemang, Globe and Mail
