The federal government is changing the laws that protect our environment and ensure that every Canadian has a voice.  Closson Chase supports the Black Out Speak Out initiative, launched  May 7^th, that seeks to preserve two core Canadian values: nature and democracy.

On June 4^th, 2012 we will darken our homepage for the day. This symbolic act, in solidarity with charities, non-governmental organizations, unions and social groups across Canada, is intended to show the government that silence is not an option for Canadians.

The budget bill, C-38, replaces the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act.  The bill allows the federal government to crack down on charities, including environmental groups, that advocate for better laws and policies, override National Energy Board decisions, rush projects through a weakened environmental review process to speed up approvals, and shut citizen groups out of environmental reviews for pipelines.

As Peter Robinson, CEO of the David Suzuki Foundation “[t]his is about the ability of people to speak out in a democratic society.”

Participating organizations include: David Suzuki Foundation, Greenpeace Canada, Environmental Defence, Equiterre, Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society, Sierra Club of Canada, Pembina Institute, Nature Canada, Ecojustice,  West Coast Environmental Law,  and World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Canada.

On Friday night, April 13, Bernie Finkelstein, a major figure of Canada’s entertainment world (and a resident of Ameliasburgh, in Prince Edward County), will be showcasing his new book True North: A Life in the Music Business as part of the PEC Authors Festival. The event is taking place at 7 p.m. at Picton’s Books and Company, with a “mix and mingle” cocktail hour followed by the official launch of the book at 8 p.m.

The well-known producer and industry leader surely has a lot to tell, with a story spanning four decades of work  - a story he wrote in the County, where he has been spending more time since 2007, when he decided to continue his professional activities at a more relaxed pace. Finkelstein is notably known as the founder of True North Records, home to top Canadian musicians like Bruce Cockburn, Murray McLauchlan, Carole Pope & Rough Trade, Randy Bachman, The Rheostatics and 54-40, to name but a few. He continues to work as the manager for Bruce Cockburn to this day. The many honors he has received include an induction in the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 2003, as well as the Order of Canada, which he was awarded in 2007.

While spending time in the County, Bernie Finkelstein also has become “enamoured” with County wines, as he says. The launch will link the book project with this love for our local wines, as Finkelstein will be interviewed by Richard Johnston, of By Chadsey’s Cairns winery, and also as Closson Chase will present him with a bottle of 2008 South Clos Chardonnay, one of our best cuvées yet.
